Amazon Customer Reviews:
An overall success. - (5/5)
I brought this DVD 2 days ago & have to say it is brilliant.
The cast are amazing & play there parts very well.
Julie Walters deserves an ocar she is a national treasure.
For those who have seen her as the mild mannered Mrs Weasley in the Harry Potter films be warned your in for a shock when she sings "macaroons"
a delightful song about biscuits with a rude line about Ozzy Osbourne.
Almost 3 hours of pure fun.
Well worth the money I paid for it.
Lovely ... - (5/5)
This was a real treat to watch and we have watched it over and over again. We missed the origional West End version so this DVD was a great chance to catch up with Mrs O and all the rest.
We saw the national Tour - an improved version on this origional production overall we thought - excellent songs placed more carefully than in this version. I have been trying to find a cast recording on CD of the tour version, if anyone knows where it is - if there is one - I would love to get hold of it.
Cut to the action (i.e. start at scene 7) - (4/5)
Having seen this show on its national tour, I was really looking forward to the DVD arriving. Clearly, by the time the show hit the road, some rather dead, dry wood had been pruned away from the start. All that rehearsal business was painfully tedious, and I think we only managed 3 minutes before searching forward to find the start of the "show within the show" (scene 7 on the disc).
At this point, it all improved immeasurably. There are some excellent songs (although I was sorry to miss "Tip Top Tap", which remains in the opening wilderness), all very clever pastiches, with some brilliant lyrics. My favourite song is "Have Some Tea" - a real tour de force for Julie Walters.
The extras on the disc include excerpts with Victoria Wood playing Mrs O.. They are fine when approached on their own terms, but if, like me, you grew up with Julie Walters' interpretation of the character, you may well find them a disappointment.
A cheap laugh - (4/5)
I bought this DVD for my mother over Christmas, and I watched it last week. Personally, I found it hilarious, if not slightly slow to start. The music is in Victoria Wood's usual style and was enjoyed by all of my family (so much so that we're going to see it in Leeds in April). I wouldn't rank it with Avenue Q or Wicked, but worth the price, definately.
dire - dreadful - (1/5)
Oh dear what a load of tripe.
Having enjoyed the original Acorn Antiques we sat down to enjoy the musical. Thank god we only borrowed a copy! The snores on the settee opposite were quickly joined by snores on the settee I was sat on. Two down in 30 minutes.
A no star rating - pity you can't give a minus star rating, but I was forced to give it one
