Amazon Editorial Review
As light and frothy as the Vivienne Westwood wedding gown that's an unofficial fifth star, the film version of Sex and the City is both captivatingly stylish and sweetly sentimental. Viewers who loved hanging with Carrie Bradshaw and her three pals during the series' TV run will feel as though no time has passed. Except that it has: Carrie and Big are poised to make a Big Commitment; Miranda and Steve are facing the breakup of their wonderful family; Charlotte and Harry have added to their brood; and Samantha (are we sitting down?) has been devoted to hunky Smith for five full years. Still, in all that time, the women's style, conviviality, and appetite for bons mots have only grown. When practical attorney Miranda learns that Carrie is considering moving in with Big (in possibly the coolest apartment in Manhattan), she can't help but frown in that but-you-might-lose-everything way. Carrie's retort: "For once, can't you feel what I want you to feel--jealous?!"

The cast is spot-on, as always. Sarah Jessica Parker is effortless as the angst-ridden yet practical, stylish yet vulnerable Carrie. Kim Cattrall is deliciously decadent as Samantha, but she's wiser now and knows herself and her needs for a real relationship. Kristin Davis, as Charlotte, has quietly become the most gorgeous among the beauties, her sleek presence both winsome and sophisticated. And Cynthia Nixon (Miranda) shows nuance as a woman torn between betrayal and grudging hope. Supporting roles include Candice Bergen as the Vogue editor who anoints Carrie "The Last Single Girl in New York," and Jennifer Hudson, as a starry-eyed, ambitious romantic who represents the new generation of SATC women. Through it all, New York is a benevolent cocoon that envelopes and nurtures the women and their friendships and careers. No matter that none of them appears to have any semblance of "real" family; as long as they have each other, and Manhattan, all will be right with their world. --A.T. Hurley

Not bad, but not great - (3/5)
I was a huge fan of the show. It was funny, witty, and well observed. The characters were very well rounded out.

The problem with this movie is that it feels more like a nostalgic "look at us, weren't we great" than a real continuation. I do applaud the choice to accept the passing of time and have the women older, but the whole thing feels clunky and overwrought in places. Most of the best supporting characters have been sidelined, and Jennifer Hudson's new character is unnecessary and one note (a waste of her talent). The four women seem to have been turned back into the worst and most cliched versions of themselves.

Carrie was always self absorbed, but her maudlin self pity for the whole movie is grating and over bearing rather than just one facet of a complex woman as it was on the show. She's also focussed far too much on at the expense of the other women, which the TV show wasn't half so guilty of. Samantha is underused with a weak story line (though at least its conclusion seemed very Samantha), and Charlotte is turned into a one note 'my life is perfect' type. There's zero movement with her character in the story though Kristin Davis is as lovely as ever in the part. Only Miranda is done any justice in this movie, and given how inspirational these characters were to so many women it seems criminal.

The much vaunted wedding dress and fashion show sequences just come off as self indulgent, and in general the movie just seems to lack the spunk and spark of its TV predecessor. It all feels like a slightly sloppy patische of the greatness that went before. Perhaps that's inevitable, trying to fill 2+ hours instead of a mere thirty/forty minutes? Please don't get me wrong, it's entertaining and fans of the show will enjoy it, I did, but it's not all I was hoping it would be.

A Christmas Turkey - (1/5)
Watched this with my partner and we both thought it was rubbish. Being gay and having a couple of glasses of wine didn't help, still thought it stank, which is a pity as we both enjoyed the series. Glad I didn't pay to see this turkey at the cinema.

Dreadful - (1/5)
This has got to be one of the worst films of its genre. I thought at first, and then realised, I was actually watching a bunch of clothes hangers with fabrics trying to act.

The script was so thin on value and character dimension you could have slipped a cigarette paper in between unnoticed. Even when trying to classify this as a bit of fluffy entertainment I felt completely let down.

It's always a bit sad when actresses past their prime of youth try to maintain a 'forever young' image and then look like they've been flayed for all their sins only to have had the skin re-applied by a oneyed butcher with two left hands.

The actresses looked like and acted as if they were just about ready to go into mummification, and the only thing that made them look alive were these garish clothes, cut to look as if they were made with the left-overs of a cloth remnants sale at Bergdorf Goodman's. Never even mind the hairdos effected in a windtunnel and then sprayed to perfection by a restyling crew of plasterers.

Miss SJP particularly looked as if she'd just been resurrected from Egypt's Antiquities collection, quickly filled with hot air which began to seep out during the making of this piece returning her to the original skin and bones look.

Sadly this piece of celluloid just about hovers below sublime ridicule. Straight to the bin to join Pearl Harbor DVD (2 Disc Set) [2001]....Oh Gawwd!

Don't even compare this with Mamma Mia! [2008] which is a treat.

An instant classic. - (5/5)
I must admit, when I read the rather poor reviews of this movie, I felt my heart sink into my boots. I figured I would wait for it to come out on DVD, because I just prefer watching SATC in the comfort of my own home, because these girls actually feel like a part of my life after 6 seasons of brilliance. The film did not disappoint. I loved the fact that it was one long episode, I was worried that the transition from small screen to big screen would be a difficult one, but they managed it excellently. The four girls are as memorable as ever, and we all knew that Carrie/Big saga was never going to be THAT easy, didn't we? I just thought, even for it's predictability, it was still a great movie, and one that you can just curl up on the sofa to as many times as you like, and it will never get boring. If you loved the show, you will love this.
